Born 1957, Maryborough, Victoria.
1976 RMIT, Diploma of Fine Art (printmaking).
1993 Monash University, Master of Arts (printmaking).
1999 Monash University, Ph.D (Extended Printmaking)

Dean Bowen has developed his own artistic language. Comical and endearing characters grace the surface of the canvas with their distinctly graphic, simple and child-like style, dealing with both the whimsical and the absurd. By drawing upon his imagination, he manipulates the materiality of paint, ink or found objects, bringing to life vibrant works that have a distinctly graphic style. He will often use the face as a theatrical space for the presentation of ideas and symbols, and is prolific in a number of mediums including painting, sculpture and printmaking. The prints are usually etchings or lithographs.

While brilliant hues dominate his palette, Dean succeeds in presenting subtleties that are beautifully played out. The combination of luscious colour and endearing, larger-than-life characters, Dean creates playful compositions that are reminiscent of one’s childhood memories. Through altering the scale and the proportions of his subjects, Bowen explores how the passage of time alters and distorts the recollection of our memories, thereby creating a pathway for the viewer to question their own perceptions of past experience.

Dean's current works address themes such as the urban and suburban environment, streetscapes, traffic and city life. His bronze sculptures reflect aspects of the human condition and interaction with animals and bird life.

Bowen is the recipient of numerous awards and prizes both nationally and internationally including: Mainichi and Daikin Prizes at the Osaka Print Triennale, Japan; and the coveted Shell Fremantle Print Award. The Print Council of Australia, the City of Melbourne, and a number of other associations have commissioned him to produce a variety of artworks. In addition to these, Dean’s colourful and gentle art is a part of over 50 important Australian and International collections.
